- University approval in writing for clients located in Virginia. Some programs limit placements by state.
- Dr. Wodzenski designated as your Orchard clinical supervisor on the supervision agreement or by addendum.
- Insurance confirmed. Your liability policy must cover clients located in Virginia. Many student policies are written by state, so ask your carrier and send Orchard the confirmation.
- TeleMental Health training complete under Orchard policy and Georgia Rule 135-11-.01.
- Virginia crisis contacts documented for the client’s city or county, including the local Community Services Board.
- Consent and disclosure complete: your student status, your supervisor’s name and Virginia license, supervisor access to the record, and the limits of confidentiality under Virginia law.
Virginia’s standards of practice apply regardless of delivery method (18 Va. Admin. Code § 115-20-130), and Board guidance directs practitioners to meet the requirements of the state where the client is located at the time of service (Virginia Board of Counseling, 2022).

The duty attaches when a client communicates, during professional services, a specific and immediate threat to cause serious bodily injury or death to an identified or readily identifiable person, and the provider reasonably believes the client has the intent and ability to act immediately or imminently. Where the potential victim is a child, it also extends to threatened physical or sexual abuse (Va. Code Ann. § 54.1-2400.1). The duty is discharged by actions that include seeking involuntary admission, reasonably attempting to warn the potential victim or a minor victim’s parent or guardian, notifying law enforcement, and taking available steps to prevent violence until law enforcement takes custody.
