Attachment Development was first described by John Bowlby, Mary Main, and Mary Ainsworth in the 1960s. The result of tragic circumstances that may involve trauma, abuse, neglect, or deep loss, Disorders of Attachment interfere with an infant’s or child’s very ability to act like a part of human society. Attachment-Based solutions are the only path to healing. The RAD Counselor or Interventionist will utilize a combination of focused developmental, educational, and motivational strategies to help heal the family system and thereby help the child.

Children suffering from this developmental disorder of Attachment Development are challenged with every day life, often resorting to negative behaviors like manipulation, isolation, aggression, hyperactivity, lying, stealing, and harming self and others. Others may experience PTSD, flashbacks, and night terrors. In each case, the child suffers and causes great distress for caretakers and peers. The RAD or DSED diagnosis may be accompanied by other conditions like ADD, ADHD, OCD, ODD, Depression, and Conduct Disorder.

In some cases, the Disorder of Attachment may be related to a medical or physical condition, such as neurodevelopmental disorder. Many children diagnosed with an Autism Spectrum Disorder also experience some interference in healthy Attachment Development.

Years of investigation into this tragic disorder has led Orchard Human Services, Inc. toward an integrated curriculum and intervention plan to help children with RAD and DSED. Dr. Darleen Claire Wodzenski has created a focused curriculum and intervention strategy that addresses the learning, growth, and development of the affected child, parents and caretakers, educators, and other professionals. This cutting edge approach is bringing a sense of order and hope to families who were living through utter chaos.

An author and national speaker, Dr. Darleen Claire is a Clinical Mental Health Counselor, Exceptional Student Educator, and Non-Clinical Psychologist who specializes in creating effective integrated strategies to address complex and co-occurring disorders of Attachment, Socio-Emotional, Behavioral, and Self-Regulatory Development as well as challenges of Learning, Development, and Neurodevelopment [including Autism Spectrum Disorder].
